Stonyfield Reduces Sugar in Products


Stonyfield, maker of yogurt featuring simple, organic ingredients and owned by Danone, is reducing the added sugar in products across its portfolio, with a target to purchase 25 percent less sugar this year.

After two years of research, using its proprietary library of culture strains – the living organisms that convert pasteurized milk to yogurt during fermentation – Stonyfield has found a formula that reduces tartness and balances the sweetness of yogurt, which allows for the sugar reduction without sacrificing flavor.

“We’ve tried reducing sugar over the years,” noted Lisa Hammer, product development manager in a Fortune article. “And we get feedback that they (consumers) don’t like it. They don’t like the sugar, and they don’t like the alternatives.”

Stonyfield YoKids yogurt is available now with 40 percent less sugar than the leading lowfat children’s yogurt.
YoBaby, which is already offered in a plain, unsweetened version, will soon feature all varieties with the no-sugar-added formulation.

By the fall, the company’s Smooth & Creamy varieties in both cups and quarts as well as the lowfat Smoothies will have at least 25 percent less sugar than the current formulation.
