Specialty Food Foundation Issues Hunger Relief Challenge
The Specialty Food Foundation (SSF) issued the specialty food market a friendly challenge in its “East vs. West” Embrace Hunger Relief month competition to address food insecurity. The foundation’s Embrace Hunger Relief Month and the Specialty Association’s (SFA) member challenge run throughout Feeding America’s Hunger Action Month in September.
Embrace Hunger Relief was initially launched as a single day event in 2014, but a strong response from the industry encouraged an expansion into one week in 2015 and two months in 2016, one in the fall and one in spring. The most recent campaign in April raised $2,340 and 18, 127 pounds of food in local charity donations. In that month’s competition, West was the clear victor against East. Participants are encouraged to document and share their Embrace Hunger Relief efforts with the hashtag #EHRM17.
“Hunger is a huge problem in the U.S. and the SFF is excited to inspire the industry to get more involved and make a difference,” said Ron Tanner, VP, Philanthropy, Government and Industry Relations, Specialty Food Foundation. “We know many specialty food companies are actively engaged in local hunger programs as well as managing food waste and pioneering food repurposing. Watching SFA members come together nationally during Embrace Hunger Relief Month is yet another indication of the importance of social good to these entrepreneurs.”
