FreshDirect Goes to Washington

FreshDirect, an online fresh food retailer in the Northeast, is expanding its service to the Washington, D.C., metro area with deliveries of farm-fresh produce, high-quality meat, seafood, dairy, prepared meals and grocery staples beginning April 5. A new facility opened in Prince George’s County to service the D.C. area and employs more than 50 people.

“D.C. cares deeply about great-tasting food, with residents that are health-conscious foodies with extremely busy schedules in need of a better, more convenient way to get food,” said Jason Ackerman, CEO and co-founder. “We're confident D.C. customers will taste the difference in our food as well as love the convenience of skipping the store. We are excited to expand our geographic footprint and look forward to being part of the D.C. metropolitan area.”

FreshDirect currently operates in five states in the Northeast and includes the New York City and Philadelphia metro areas. It sources directly from a network of farms, fisheries and suppliers. The service will offer more than 12,000 items to customers in D.C., including jumbo blueberries, source-identified organic chicken and more than 30 premium grass-fed beef items. It also will introduce the D.C. market to specialty items like Roberta’s pizza from Brooklyn, Boar’s Head deli meats and wild-caught albacore tuna from the company’s extensive private brand collection, JUST FreshDirect.

Prepared meal and no-subscription meal kits also are part of FreshDirect’s offerings and the company also will give D.C. customers the option of its “At the Office” service, which includes chef-prepared breakfast, luncheon platters for business meetings, catering services for events and popular brands of snacks, beverages and pantry items.
