Erewhon to Open in Downtown Los Angeles

By Anna Wolfe - 01/16/2018
Erewhon Market will open its fifth location inside this historic building in downtown Los Angeles.

Erewhon Market will open its fifth natural food store at 900 South Hill St. in downtown Los Angeles.

The 9,500-square-foot store will be on the ground level of a historic building owned by Beverly Hills-based developer Markwood Enterprises.

Erewhon at 9th & Hill will feature a fully integrated tonic, juice and coffee bar, pizza oven, hot and cold cases, a wide selection of organic, vegan and raw foods, and more.

“We’re thrilled to be coming to a unique site in downtown LA where the historical landscape of the building blends perfectly with the nature of Erewhon, which has been a pioneer in the health food world since the 1960s,” said Tony Antoci, CEO of Erewhon Market. “The original location of the space at 9th & Hill was built as a drug store, and we’re exciting to reinvent the building through Erewhon’s focus on healing and preserving the body through natural ingredients.”

The opening of Erewhon at 9th & Hill is part a larger effort to revitalize the Historic Broadway corridor in downtown L.A., a neighborhood that has experienced a surge in new retail and restaurants, becoming a focal point for creative office and boutique hotel development.

The neighborhood’s 10-year strategic economic development plan is approaching its completion, and what was once a street utilized to get from one place to another has become a destination for hospitality, art, entertainment and a unique urban pedestrian experience.

“The opening of Erewhon will be a welcomed addition to the retail and revitalization activity going on in and around 9th Street and Hill and Broadway,” said Councilmember José Huizar. “With the help of our partners, our Bringing Back Broadway initiative has propelled successful development in that area, and I’m sure Erewhon will do great things at its new DTLA location.”

One of the city’s oldest parking structures, 9th & Hill is at the center of the downtown revitalization efforts given its location in the Historic Core District and its designation as a historical cultural monument.
