Beverages, Snacks Top Food Intros
Beverages and snacks topped the list for new product introductions in 2016, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Mintel Global New Products Database. Companies introduced 21,435 new food products last year, with beverages accounting for 18.5 percent of the new products and snacks making up 14.8 percent. Sauces/ dressings/condiments, bakery foods and candy/gum round out the top five categories.
Of those more than 21,000 new products, 3,975 were beverages. In the beverage category, beer and wine accounted for 21 percent of the new product introductions. In the snack category, 3,172 new products hit the shelves, with snack/cereal/energy bars leading in the new product segment along with wheat/other grain-based snacks, vegetable snacks and meat snacks.
